Menahga School District grapples with online education – Park Rapids Enterprise

Students are leaving brick-and-mortar schools for online learning.

The Menahga School District is considering combating this trend by providing its own online educational program.

Elevate Online is a Minnesota Department of Education-approved online provider through Southwest Metro Intermediate District 228.

Eric Schneider, executive director of Elevate Online, presented a partnership agreement at the Monday, March 18 school board meeting.

All school districts are wrestling with this as parents become more aware of online educational opportunities, he said.

If approved, program options would be available to Menagha families (both K-12 live-virtual as well as 9-12 self-guided), including special education and English Language services.

The Menahga School District has the option to waive the 50% maximum for “supplemental learning, thus allowing students to remain fully enrolled for graduation status and/or athletics/activities. Students continue to earn Menahga credits, and if a student openly enrolls into Menahga, the student would be able to participate in Menahga athletics and activities.”

Schneider explained students would technically be considered “supplementally enrolled” at Elevate Online.

“So they’re coming to us for part of their schedule,” he said. “We really do behave as an extension of your school.”

Superintendent Jay Kjos recommended approving the partnership.

JAM 2024: IIT Madras releases toppers’ list | Education News

HOURS 2024: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras has released the toppers’ list of the Joint Admissions Test (JAM) 2024. The candidates who appeared for the examination can check the toppers’ list and cut-off at the official website of JAM — jam.iitm.ac.in.

The JAM 2024 website also holds the master answer key and the scorecards.

IIT JAM 2024: Cut-off

As per the official notice, the Biotechnology (BT) cut-off is 44.46 for the general category (40.01 for OBC-NCL / EWS, and 22.23 for SC / ST / PwD).

Similarly, the cut-off for Chemistry is 25.38 for the general category, 22.84 for OBC-NCL / EWS, and 12.69 for SC / ST / PwD). The Economics cut-off is 24.64 for the general category, 22.17 for OBC-NCL / EWS, and 12.32 for SC / ST / PwD).

Mathematics cut-off for general category is 11.22, 10.09 for OBC-NCL / EWS, and 5.61 for SC / ST / PwD). For Mathematical Statistics, the general cut-off is 23.03, 20.72 for OBC-NCL / EWS, and 11.51 for SC / ST / PwD).

Thousands of Greek students rallied in Athens and other cities on Thursday to protest against planned education reforms that would allow the introduction of private universities in the country.

The conservative government of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who won a second term last year, is expected to submit a bill to parliament this month that would permit private universities to operate inside Greece.

The government has said the schools will operate as branches of foreign universities. Many believe the move will devalue degrees from Greece’s public universities and that the private system will exclude those who cannot afford it.

The change will “tear apart the public university as we knew it”, said student Christina Iliopoulou, who joined the protest in Athens. “It will destroy our daily life in terms of how we will be able to find a job after we graduate.”

The protests were largely peaceful, but there was a brief clash in Athens between protesters and police, who fired tear gas.

Universities in Greece are government-funded institutions where attendance has been free for decades.

But Greece has implemented a series of education reforms in the past despite fierce opposition from students and staff.

UN issues global alert over teacher shortage

The global teacher shortage alert was issued at a meeting on Monday of the International Task Force on Teachers for Education in Johannesburg, South Africa, where the UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Panel on the Teaching Profession announced a new set of recommendations to safeguard future learning for all.

Quality education for ‘learning societies’

“Now, more than ever, we need to move towards learning societies. People everywhere need high-quality skills, knowledge and education. Above all, they need the best teachers possible,” UN chief António Guterres said in his video message to the forum.

UNESCO points out that seven out of 10 teachers at the secondary level will need to be replaced by 2030, along with over half of all existing teachers who will have left the profession by the decade’s end.

Although it’s a global issue, the teacher shortage is impacting sub-Saharan Africa the most, where an estimated 15 million new teachers are needed by 2030.

Teachers are overwhelmed

The effect of a worldwide teacher shortage is profound, creating larger class sizes, overburdened educators, educational disparities and financial strain on school systems, impacting educational quality and access.
