AN education system that emphasizes humanity in line with academic progress – this is one of the goals of the Education Ministry’s “Human Education” (humane education) concept.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the concept is embedded in what the ministry does, to create an education system that nurtures children and youths into becoming well-adjusted, morally grounded and positive contributors to the nation’s growth.

“It is about ensuring no child is left behind in attaining access to quality education,” she said in a recent interview with the media, adding that this embodies the first shift of the Malaysia Education Blueprint (MEB) 2013-2025.

According to the blueprint, education is often seen as an enabler for social mobility, enabling children born in poor families to earn higher incomes as adults.

Fadhlina said the first shift of the blueprint states that the ministry wants to provide equal access to quality education of an international standard.

The ministry’s practice of humanizing education, she added, is completely aligned with the aspirations of the blueprint.

The ministry’s compulsory education policy, which is supported by legislation under the Education Act 1996 [Act 550]obligates children to receive formal education up to Year Six.

Fadhlina said “Humane Education” resonates with

What Personalized Learning Is Not

What Personalized Learning Is Not

“I really want to personalize learning for my students, but I just don’t see how it’s possible—there’s no way I can create individual lesson plans for all of my students everyday!”

“I really like what you’ve shared with us today, but I can’t personalize my students’ learning because I don’t have enough devices for all of my students.”

These are just two of the statements I heard from teachers about the challenges of facilitating personalized learning. As an instructional technology coach for a large district in the metropolitan Atlanta area, I serve several schools. Working closely with over 300 teachers on a consistent basis means that I talk one-on-one with teachers a lot. Teachers openly share their legitimate concerns about implementing personalized learning, and unfortunately, the sentiments above are not uncommon. I feel it’s my responsibility to help teachers understand that both of the statements above are misconceptions.

Attempts to clearly define personalized learning are commonplace in education now more than ever—and the more conversations we have, the more apparent it becomes that many of us (educators) are elements of how to define the term, or

State superintendent presents to education administrators on topic of equity – News

State Superintendent of Education Dr. Carmen Ayala presented on the topic of equity to doctoral students in the Education Administration and Foundations (EAF) department on Wednesday, September 30. Ayala served as guest speaker for EAF 512, a doctoral level policy methods class taught by Drs. Lisa Hood and Erika Hunt.

“We approached Dr. Ayala to be a guest speaker for our class after many of the students expressed interest with the topic of equity and how they could lead in their schools or districts with an equity mindset,” said Hunt. “We couldn’t think of anyone more qualified to speak on this topic than Dr. Ayala, whose equity-focused strategies in two districts led to dramatic shifts in closing the achievement gap.”

Prior to her appointment as state superintendent, Ayala led with an equity-mindset and laser focus on curriculum development and accountability of equity in two school districts. Now as state superintendent, she is focused on incorporating equity goals into the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) strategic plan. ISBE’s strategic plan now includes a prominent equity statement and equity goals and metrics for monitoring the work. An Equity Impact Analysis Tool will be used across the agency to ensure alignment of

Indiana gov. vetoes bill defining anti-semitism, signs proclamation condemning anti-semitism

Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb vetoed a bill Monday that would have defined antisemitism in state education code while simultaneously signing a proclamation condemning all forms of antisemitism.

The Republican governor cited changes made to the bill in the final days of the legislative session in a news release. Aimed at addressing antisemitism on college campuses, the bill’s opponents argued that early versions of it would penalize people for criticizing Israel.

Disagreements between lawmakers in the Republican-controlled state House and Senate threatened to kill the bill before reaching a compromise in the final hours of the legislative session on March 8.

This is the second time the state House has tried to pass the legislation; an identical bill died last year after failing to reach a committee hearing in the state Senate.

Around the country, similar legislation rose to prominence this session amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

The proposal would broadly define antisemitism as religious discrimination, claiming it would “provide educational opportunities free of religious discrimination.”

Defined in 2016 by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, antisemitism is “a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or
