Akron North High students, staff fight for building to be replaced

Akron North High students, staff fight for building to be replaced

North High School sophomore Dev Bhujel spoke to the Akron Public Schools board Monday night about replacing North High School.

Floor boards that are warped from water damage. Classrooms that are either 55 degrees or 85 degrees. Ceilings that leak, and in some cases, partially collapse into classrooms around students trying to learn.

The conditions at North High School were abysmal, students and staff told the school board Monday, begging the board not to delay the replacement of their building or hinge the project on the passage of a levy.

“Somehow, North went from being a certainty to a possibility, and other groups’ want to take precedence over our basic needs,” Janice Weaver, an academy principal at North, said during public comment. “Once again, North’s 1,000 combined students and staff are being left behind, and we risk continuing to miss out on the equity that the rest of the district receives.”

North is the latest neighborhood or school community to pack a board meeting in recent weeks to advocate for its place in the district’s long-term facilities plan that is still awaiting a board vote.

The plan currently up for review calls for North High to be replaced, but in the second phase of the plan, and not before the passage of a permanent improvement levy to pay off the

Twice-a-year boards to be rolled out in 2024: Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan

Twice-a-year boards to be rolled out in 2024: Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan

Speaking to TOI’s Manash Gohain, Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan said the new textbooks for classes III to VI, classes IX and XI will be ready for the 2024-25 academic session and the remaining in 2025-26.
Excerpts from the interview:
Parents and schools are confused about when the twice-a-year board exams are going to be rolled out.
The National Curriculum Framework (NCF) for schools, based on the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 recommendations was notified and as per its recommendations the new school syllabus is being designed. NEP made recommendations for assessments and exams, which have been dealt with in a detailed manner in the NCF. Now we have reached the implementation phase.

Currently board exams are being conducted at the end of classes X and XII, annually. Reforming that, now each of these exams will be offered twice, which however is optional for students. Based on preparation, a student can take the exam once or twice and the best score will be taken. This will ease the pressure on children from the stress of one exam.
This twice-a-year board format will be rolled out from the 2024-25 academic year. Which means this will be adopted from the 2025 board

The Class of 2023 lost everything to COVID. Then they fought back

The Class of 2023 lost everything to COVID. Then they fought back

One day there was school, and the next day the classrooms were closed.

Members of the class of 2023 were freshmen in high school or college, still getting used to their new normal. Suddenly, nothing was normal.

Vacated schools became meal- and laptop-delivery hubs. Dorms closed. Siblings clustered at the kitchen table, headphones on. They tried to follow a teacher who had become a square on a screen. They lost learning so fewer people lost lives. Even small children learned to say “You’re muted.”

They were teenagers and 20-somethings, and their lives had been muted.

No staying after class to ask a quick question. No flirting with a cute classmate. College students hungry for independence found themselves trapped at home.

When they did return to the classroom, instead of proms and activities, they had masks and nose swabs. School, for some the only safe place, wasn’t safe anymore. Still, they did what it took to keep going.

The USA TODAY Network spoke with more than a dozen seniors from colleges and high schools across the nation. Some were celebrating their graduation. Some hadn’t made it there. They talked about their depression, their loneliness, their isolation. Also the talents they discovered,

Florida Senate passes scaled-back school ‘deregulation’ plan

Florida Senate passes scaled-back school ‘deregulation’ plan

TALLAHASSEE – The Florida Senate on Wednesday passed a suite of bills aimed at “deregulation” of public schools, with one measure undergoing a significant change that nixed a provision related to the state’s third-grade literacy policy after it was heavily criticized by former Gov. Jeb Bush.

The legislative package, a priority of Senate President Kathleen Passidomo, R-Naples, is aimed at what she characterized as “cutting red tape” and taking burdensome regulations off the books for schools.

Included in the plan is a proposal (SB 7004) that would make changes related to state assessments and instructions. For example, the bill would remove a requirement that high-school students pass the state’s tenth-grade English-language arts exams in order to graduate. Instead, the exam would count for 30 percent of the student’s final course grade.

The measure would also do away with a requirement that students pass an Algebra I end-of-course exam in order to earn a diploma.

Bill sponsor Corey Simon, a Tallahassee Republican, has touted the deregulation effort as a way to let teachers place more focus on classroom instruction, which he has said would benefit students.

How PE Boosts Student Mental Health

How PE Boosts Student Mental Health

Physical Education (PE) is more than fitting up in gym clothes to run on a track, learning the basics of different sports, or participating in the presidential fitness test. It involves a lot of physical activity to be sure, but the PE curriculum also includes mental, social, and emotional education.

“A successful PE program can literally change the way a school functions as a whole,” says Erika Mundt, a PE teacher at Iowa West City High School in Iowa. “PE involves cooperative learning, acceptance of yourself and others, learning to try new things no matter how good you are, communication, and problem solving.”

Erika Mundt

Mundt, who was the Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE) America High School PE Teacher of the Year in 2018, says physical activity during the school day is essential for student mental health, especially coming out of the pandemic.

“I just hope that school districts and administrators take into consideration PE when they are trying to catch up with the pandemic,” says Mundt, “and realize that cutting PE and cutting activity time isn’t the way to get students to learn more. PE is an efficient way to help kids learn more.”

Why Is Education Important? | Purpose of Education

Education is typically divided into three categories: formal education, informal education, and non-formal education.

Formal education
Formal education is the type that is typically conducted in a classroom setting in an academic institution. This is where students are taught basic skills such as reading and writing, as well as more advanced academic lessons.
Also known as ‘formal learning’, it usually begins in elementary school and culminates in post-secondary education. It is provided by qualified teachers or professors and follows a curriculum.

Informal education
Informal education, on the other hand, is the type that is done outside the premises of an academic institution. Often, this is when a person learns skills or acquires knowledge from home, when visiting libraries, or browsing educational websites through a device. Learning from the elders in one’s community can also be an important form of informal education.

Such education is often not planned or deliberate, nor does it follow a regimented timetable or a specific curriculum. It is spontaneous and may also be described as a natural form of education.

Non-formal education
Non-formal education has qualities similar to both formal and informal education. It follows a timetable and is systemically implemented but not necessarily conducted within …

Lincoln’s Standing Bear High School opens doors for the first time

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The brand-new Standing Bear High School opened its doors for the first day of school on Monday with a pep rally for the class of 2027.

That will be the first class to spend all four years there.

This year, the school at 70th Street and Saltillo Road will teach freshmen and sophomores. Not enough juniors were interested this year, school administrators said.

The freshmen are excited to get started and create the school culture from scratch.

“I feel like being able to create your own culture and leave your mark for everyone to be able to use that is kind of amazing,” Renton Laholt said.

Typically, students who move to a new school feel alone and nervous because they don’t know anybody.

But with this situation, those nerves are shared by everyone.

“It’s everyone’s, like, fresh start, and everyone’s starting over,” freshman Jane Balck said. “So I’m not the only one that’s nervous or trying to, like, fit in or whatever.”

The high school building may be a carbon copy of Lincoln Northwest, but there are some differences in what goes on
