Alabama bans DEI programs and ‘divisive concepts’ in public colleges | Education News

The bill, known as SB129, bans publicly-funded institutions from maintaining DEI offices or teaching what the bill calls ‘divisive concepts’ about race and identity.

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey has signed a bill banning diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs in publicly-funded colleges, making the southern state one of the newest Republican-led states to enact broad measures against what they claim is a leftward tilt in the US education.

The bill, known as SB129, bans institutions from maintaining DEI offices or teaching what the bill calls “divisive concepts” about race and identity, including discussions of whether “slavery and racism are aligned with the founding principles of the United States”. It authorizes state agencies to “discipline or terminate employees or contractors who violate” the law.

It also requires them to designate toilets as only for men or women, a move against transgender rights advocates’ push for gender-neutral toilets.

“My administration has and will continue to value Alabama’s rich diversity, however, I refuse to allow a few bad actors … go under the acronym of DEI, using unpaid funds, to push their liberal political movement,” Ivey said in a statement.

The law is due to take effect in October.

New Leicester education center to provide opportunities for city’s young people | News

Young people in Leicester will have a greater chance of realizing their ambitions thanks to a new education center in the city.

Dame Maggie Aderin-Pocock, who herself overcame barriers during her school days to forge a successful career as a space scientist and broadcaster, was chosen to open the IntoUniversity Centre, in Beaumont Leys.

Leicester’s IntoUniversity center is a collaborative partnership between IntoUniversity, the University of Leicester and De Montfort University. The initiative has been funded thanks to a number of generous donors including the Randal Foundation, founded by Dr Nik and Moni Kotecha, and the Ian and Clare Mattioli Charitable Trust.

The center will provide young people access to after-school academic support, mentoring with university students and professionals, in-school aspiration-raising workshops and enrichment and work experience opportunities.

Dame Aderin-Pocock, who was the University of Leicester’s Chancellor and attended 13 different schools and had undiagnosed dyslexia as a child, cut the ribbon at the opening, before telling school pupils set to benefit from the center to aim high when it comes to education .

Dame Aderin-Pocock, who is a co-presenter of BBC Sky At Night, said: “I know the enormous power of education first-hand. Having dyslexia, I
